Rhythm, rippling and swirls run wild in the paintings. The theme of my works is moving through space, moving towards it, leaving it behind. I look for ways to paint a world where nothing stays still, where form is constantly on its way towards another form.
A large canvas gives the paint room to move, as one does not hit the edges right away. As layers of paint accumulate, tensions begin to emerge between the colors and marks. Something arises from a surprise, and sometimes it has to be searched for. At times, it is lurking in a dead end – and when the illusion of a goal disappears, the surprise may suddenly break loose.
When I step into a surprise, my forward thinking disappears. I notice how thinking on autopilot puts things on a line, trying to anticipate and guess. In a surprise, the world opens up in bursts spreading in every direction. There is no knowledge of what is to come, no guarantees – only a spectrum of possibilities and a glimpse of freedom. A thorough movement bubbles to the surface, beyond the reach of words. A restless movement churns between all concepts and contexts. Alongside uncertainty and ambiguity, there is a strange certainty of existence. In the middle of unpredictability, my feelings sway between terror and exhilaration. Playfulness dances in the air.
